Either way, whether you’re doing you in the realm of sexual self-care, or you’re getting sensual with someone else, there are a slew of natural remedies that can actually boost your libido!

Indeed, when those moments or periods strike in which you’re feeling not-so-aroused, why not go herbal and boost your libido in a natural and safe way?

Here, we talk about 10 herbal products, including some delicious foods and spices, that you can enjoy whilst taking advantage of their libido-enhancing properties!

1. Yohimbine

Yohimbine is an indole alkaloid derived from the bark of the Central African yohimbe tree. Its biggest claim to fame is its ability to increase blood flow and nerve impulses to the genitals, and thus is considered an aphrodisiac.

In some cases, penis owners living with erectile dysfunction have found that yohimbine not only alleviated their condition, but also increased their sexual sensation and stamina. In fact, a 2007 study looked at 29 penis owners to prove the effectiveness of this bark.

Researchers found that yohimbine does, in fact, appear to increase sexual vigor and prolong erections. Additionally, there were no significant side effects caused by yohimbine, making it a safe and useful treatment option for orgasmic dysfunction.

2. Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha is a shrub that grows in Asia and Africa, and is an excellent natural remedy for stress, high blood pressure, and better immunity functioning. This is because it contains chemicals that are said to calm the brain, and give one’s body a helping hand when it comes to physical and mental stress. But that’s not all ashwagandha is useful for…

In a 2015 study, 50 healthy vulva owners were given a 300mg capsule of HCARE (high concentration ashwagandha root extract) twice a day for eight weeks.

The results showed significantly higher levels of sexual functioning with a lack of adverse effects, suggesting that ashwangandha is safe to consume and a useful treatment for those with sexual dysfunction.

3. Maca Root

Maca root, a member of the radish family, flourishes in the ground of the Andes mountains in Peru (hence why it’s also called ‘Peruvian ginseng’). It has a nutty, slightly butterscotch-like taste, and is said to be an absolute superfood, giving those who take it a wide range of health benefits. One of these benefits include heightened sexual desire.

In a 2002 study, 57 penis owners were given varying doses of maca root supplements for a period of 12 weeks. The results showed that those who didn’t take the placebo had a jolt in their libido after a mere eight weeks.

What’s also great about maca root is that it has the ability to relieve some symptoms associated with post menopause. A 2008 study found that postmenopausal vulva owners experienced a reduction in anxiety and depression, as well as an increase in sexual functioning, after making use of maca root.

4. Ginkgo Biloba

Commonly known as ‘ginkgo’, ginkgo biloba is a species of tree native to China. This tree is so special, in fact, that it’s also known as “a living fossil” as it’s the only surviving member of an ancient order of plants. Traditional Chinese medicine often looks to its leaves and seeds as a natural remedy for a number of ailments, but ginkgo extract is just as popular, especially today.

But why is Ginkgo biloba so powerful for your libido? Well, ginkgo has the power to improve blood levels of nitric oxide which, in turn, improves one’s circulation by dilating the blood vessels. In other words, there may be an improved blood flow to the genitals when gingko is involved.

Another interesting fact about gingko biloba is that it may have positive long term effects when it comes to the sexual dysfunction of vulva owners… but only when used in conjunction with therapy. A 2008 study found that those who underwent treatment using ginkgo biloba plus attended regular therapy sessions had a significantly enhanced orgasm functioning compared to the placebo group.

5. Fenugreek

Fenugreek seeds are a common ingredient in dishes from South Asia, and is a herb that’s been used in alternative medicine for centuries. These seeds can be used to spice up a meal, while their leaves are tasty simply to devour as herbs or vegetables.

What’s also great about fenugreek is that this plant has been shown to boost the sex lives of those who are experiencing a low libido.

In a study from 2011 published in Phytotherapy Research, 60 healthy penis owners experienced an increase in sex drive by at least a quarter after taking an extract of fenugreek twice a day for six weeks. This is believed to occur because of the compounds found inside the fenugreek seed, saponins, which stimulate the production of sex hormones, including testosterone.

6. Tribulus

Tribulus is a plant that produces fruit covered with spines, and thrives on dry climate locations in places such as Southern Eurasia and Africa.

In many cultures, tribulus is often referred to as an aphrodisiac, as it’s said to boost libido for those who have low levels of arousal. But is there science to back up these claims? Yes, actually.

Researchers found that penis owners who had a reduced sex drive and took 750-1500 mg of Tribulus terrestiris daily for two months showed an increase in sexual desire by 79 percent. A large percentage of vulva owners, who also had a reduced sex drive and took 500-1500 mg of the supplement for three months, revealed that they too experienced higher levels of arousal—67 percent of the test subjects, to be precise.

7. Pistachios

The pistachio is a part of the cashew family, and its tree produces seeds that have been a popular food choice for many worldwide for centuries.

And interestingly, the Antep pistachio, a traditional Turkish snack, has been known to have some favourable effects when it comes to one’s libido.

In a study, 17 penis owners who had been living with erectile dysfunction for at least one year added 100g of pistachio nuts to their diet for a total of three months. The results showed a significant increase in erectile functioning, sexual intercourse satisfaction, orgasmic function, overall satisfaction, and sexual desire.

This change in diet also showed an improvement to their blood cholesterol, and stimulated better blood flow throughout the entire body.

8. Catuaba

Catuaba is a natural remedy derived from the bark of trees in the Brazilian rainforest. It’s been used to make medicine, particularly in the department of sexual arousal and stimulating the nervous system, and is often referred to as an aphrodisiac. But what makes it so noteworthy in the realm of boosting one’s libido?

Well, catuaba extract is considered a central nervous system stimulant. But unlike coffee, it doesn’t give one the side effects of caffeine. Many Asian herbal remedies include catuaba to treat sexual dysfunction, as it’s believed to have aphrodisiac properties that can boost one’s libido.

Not only that, but Brazil tends to call the bark from catuaba “Love Potion No. 9”.

9. Bergamot

Found in Southern Italy, bergamot is a lemon-like fruit which has multiple benefits when it comes to soothing ailments in a natural way.

The essential oils derived from its peel are commonly used in aromatherapy, and extracts can be used to control high levels of cholesterol, anxiety, and other conditions… including erectile dysfunction in patients with diabetes.

In a 2016 study, bergamot polyphenolic fraction (BPF), a product derived from bergamot juice, was given to penis owners who were experiencing erectile dysfunction (ED). ED can be a common symptom of type 2 diabetes, due to possible damage to nerves and blood vessels.

BPF however, was shown to improve ED because of the way that it supports healthy blood sugar, blood pressure, and blood cholesterol. BPF also has powerful antioxidant properties that could restore the lining of the blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more freely, reducing the chances of ED.

10. Saffron

One may pay a pretty penny to liven up their meals with a dash of saffron, but when it comes to this spice–a little goes a long way!

Adding a tiny amount of saffron to meals such as paella can bring out all kinds of intense flavours and colours, making it a treat for the eyes and the palate. But is saffron actually worth it when it comes to your libido? Well, according to a 2012 study, a mere couple of strands of this spice can boost your levels of sexual desire.

The research was conducted on 38 women who were on the medication, Fluoxetine, due to major depression. This medicine is said to induce sexual dysfunction in some patients and researchers were interested to learn whether saffron could help them boost their sexual arousal once again.

The results showed that this spice can safely and effectively improve sexual problems caused by Fluoxetine such as arousal and lubrication.
